HILDA survey

hilda-unpaid-time-stats.csv

Processed and aggregated survey response data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey by the University of Melbourne's Melbourne Institute and the Australian Government's Department of Social Services.

Columns include:

  • year: the year of the response, based on the wave number
  • sex: the sex of the respondent
  • age_group: the age group of the respondent, in 10 year groups from 15 up to 75 (and then everyone 75+)
  • activity: the form of unpaid work (originally the variable name in HILDA)
  • units: always Combined
  • activity_long: a longer description of the unpaid work
  • statistic: Indicates the nature of the value: either the Number of people in this group, or the Average number of hours per week worked
  • value: a number as per the statistic

Not included in this repository

The raw, individual response data underpinning this analysis is not included for privacy reasons.

To reproduce the analysis, you must request permission from DSS and download it via the Australian Data Archive.

Raw data should be downloaded as .dta files put directly into /data/raw-hilda (not in subfolders), keeping the names provided by ADA.

This Quarto project is frozen so that interactives can be altered and re-rendered without re-rendering the analysis (unless it is altered).

Raw country proportions downloaded from the Facebook Survey on Gender Equality at Home. Columns are:

  • Geography: country
  • Year: year
  • Question Code: shortened code for the survey question
  • Question Text: full text of the survey question
  • Response Category: shortened code for the answer
  • Response Variable: full text of the survey answer
  • Gender: gender of the respondent
  • Value: the proportion of respondents who supplied this answer

Lightly process form of the above data, focusing on the question asked in 2021. Columns are as above, but converted to lowercase and with spaces replaced by underscores (using janitor::clean_names()).

India

timeuse-india2019-*.csv

Raw tables from India's 2019 Time Use Survey (specifically from the press release that accompanied the survey's release).

Files are:

  1. -percentage: Percentage of persons of age 6 years and above participating in different activities in a day
  2. -minutes: Average time (in minutes) spent in a day per participant of age 6 years and above in different activities
  3. -pctshare: Percentage share of total time in different activities in a day per person of age 6 years and above.
  • This is used for validation purposes; we combine the first two tables manually in the analysis.

ratios-india2019.csv

Derived ratios for women's participation in selected activities compared to men. Columns include:

  • activity: the activity name from the original tables
  • activity_short: a shorter version of the activity name
  • area: either urban or rural
  • percentage: the ratio of girls and women to boys and men who did the activity
  • minutes: the ratio of average minutes girls and women who did the activity spent to boys and men who did the activity
  • share: the ratio of the share of all surveyed girls and women's time to all surveyed boys and men
