Description

Non-native speakers often says things like "Can I open the air conditioner?".

In English this is something you might do if you're going to try to repair a device or maybe clean it.
But for non-native speakers it's a direct translation from their language where the same verb means both "to open" and "to turn on".

Examples

  • In Home, when opening the Tv, it's stuck on HDMI1
  • if open the TV ,that's normal
  • Open the light in Home Assistant; Switch to color mode
  • The progression of opening the light. in a dark room.
  • One evening, my mom opened the TV

Potential false positives

Very likely. The wrong sense only works when the object of the verb is a device of some kind.

In code there will also be cases of the word for a devices as a modifier to some code or GUI element: "open the television dialog".

In English we can open some devices, such as our phones to change SIM or SD card etc. So the message should not be too insistent. There are also devices which are supposed to be opened such as fridges. We should check for which devices this mistake is actually made.

Examples

  • long press opens the lights view.
  • ... solution is to stop opening the TV mode
  • ... with the name 'remotecontrol' to open the TV menu
  • ... opens the tv settings
  • the console port is accessible even without opening the TV
