Refactor common DB operations #47
Description
Currently, custom status and editorial metadata duplicate a lot of the CRUD operations. This issue is meant to clean that up by creating a common DB operations utility so it's easier to add more modules down the line. This would be akin to introducing a generic DAO layer.
