## Mission

# About Black Python Devs
88

9-
---
10-
11-
### Own your Masters: Support members while ensuring they control the message around
12-
13-
We're here to amplify your voice, not the other way around. That's why we're happy to share what you've done without making it about us.
14-
15-
Any content that a member contributes to the community is given to them to publish as they please. That means if it's on our platforms, they allowed us to publish and have the right to change their mind at any time.
16-
17-
### Secure the Bag:
18-
19-
**Establish guidance, mentorship, and career support for _Black Python Devs_ Members**
20-
21-
Lack of stable employment often prevents members from contributing to the greater community at their desired leve. It is important that Black Python Developers are first and foremost employed and compensated at a fair rate and given opportunities to thrive.
22-
23-
We want to ensure that the members range in different technical roles, skills, and skill levels so that we can address the widest variety of needs from the community.
24-
25-
### Extend Their Reach: Expand support from existing Python and Other Technology focused organizations to communities of _Black Python Devs_ members
26-
27-
We can't be everything to everyone. We also don't need to recreate all of the amazing programs designed for Pythonistas. Our goal is to support getting these existing programs to Black developers and fill in the gaps where they exists.
28-
29-
New programs and initiatives are often done with the help of those that have come before us, so that we can ensure the best opportunity for our members.
9+
Black Python Devs was created by its founder Jay Miller after seeing a trend of the same handful of Black developers speaking at major conferences, taking leadership positions, and dealing with the same challenges towards burnout.
3010

31-
### Support the Ecosystem: Create opportunities to invest in the local communities that members of _Black Python Devs_ represent
11+
After attending PyCon US in 2022, he noticed they were able to physically count the number of Black developers that attended in person and that they made up LESS THAN 0.01% of the total attendees. Jay began asking speakers Black Pythonistas if they considered connecting with the community and the almost unanimous response was "Why would I do that?". After some encouragement one person was convinced to give a lightning talk.
3212

33-
Communities that are void of opportunities are often abandoned. While we can't move entire companies to these areas we can make sure that the local areas and businesses continue to thrive.
13+
In the following year, we saw that person get more involved in their local user group and make connections that helped lead to forward progress in their career development. That same person was also to speak at PyCon US in 2023. After much push from communities in Africa and Brazil we saw the total number of Black Pythonistas triple in number.
3414

35-
When we need to spend money, we look at where our members are and invest in their hometowns. This allows Black communities to shine beyond their point on the map.
15+
At PyCon US 2023 after an open space a Discord server called Black Python Devs was created where the community could continue to encourage this momentum and support one another.
3616

37-
## Why online first
17+
## The Goal of Black Python Devs
3818

39-
---
19+
Our goal is to become the largest community of Black Python Developers in the world and establish our community as a source for diverse leaders in the greater Python community.
4020

41-
We hope in the long run to create many in-person user groups and events, but we have to understand where we can make the largest impacts.
21+
We aim to:
4222

43-
To do this we're hoping to gather folks from around the world and see where our largest audiences are.
23+
- Establish guidance, mentorship, and career support for Black Pythonistas around the world.
24+
- Create opportunities for the Python community to invest in local communities of Black Python Devs members
25+
- Increase participation of Black Python Devs members in existing Python community programs, events, and initiatives.

# Black Python Devs Initiatives
8+
9+
## Build Local Black Community
10+
11+
We believe it is incredibly important that local community is supported as much as possible.
12+
13+
They raise the overall capability of Pythonistas in their area with much more consistency.
14+
15+
### Our Strategy
16+
17+
- Sponsor Local Conferences/Meetups organized by Black Python Devs Community Leaders
18+
- Sponsorships go towards tickets for local community members to attend
19+
20+
## Black Leadership Opportunity Fund
21+
22+
It's important that community leaders are able to grow and develop. Which is why we hope that we can get local leaders to global events where they can connect with other leaders in the community, learn from global professionals, and gain global support for their local initiatives.
23+
24+
That being said investments into opportunity grants are extremely limited and not everyone can fund attending these larger events. Furthermore, these opportunities often mean that the recipient has to personally fund their travel, only receiving reimbursement after the fact. Not everyone can get access to higher limit credit cards, loans.
25+
26+
Lastly the process for getting visas to attend can be confusing and daunting and different depending on the country. In some cases you don't know if you can get your visa appointment in time once getting approval.
27+
28+
### Our Strategy
29+
30+
- Offer a limited grant to community leaders to cover expenses around visa appointments.
31+
- Work with travel professionals to coordinate flights, hotels, and transportation while travelling
32+
- Work with conferences to make their opportunity grants accessible to as many as possible addressing the concerns of our community leaders.
33+
34+
## Build Black Excellence Equally
35+
36+
Opportunities for Black professionals skew towards those with the ability to pay their way into a comfortable life. We can't change how the game is played but we can play a different game.
37+
38+
Black Python Devs will work with content creators to give as many opportunities to Black developers for free or at a discounted rate. This involves coordinating with sponsors. What we can't partner on, we will find from within. We aim to create opportunities for Black Python developers to network with one another, learn together, and share their knowledge with our ever growing community.
39+
40+
### Our Strategy
41+
42+
- Partner with content creators for bulk discounts on learning content
43+
- Host regular events and programs in our Discord for folks to skill up, network, and learn from one another
