Our challenge is unknown location, low budget and future scale.

Today we did an experiment on the wireless scenario we encountered during the game with
@amir-arad @yuvalg and I

Wifi test 1 --- 10/06/2016

Network is compossed by the following machines

amount type
4 Pi3
3 Mac (work computers)
1 thinkpad x230 windows 7
1 Dell XPS 13 windows 10
1 Dell Studio 1558 Ubuntu
2 Desktop Monster windows 10
7 Android Note 4

19 devices total.

We loaded the network with our app and we noticed a few things (some obvious)

  1. Placing the router far away and inclosed caused some network problems.
  2. Connecting to the internet slowed the network.
  3. When 1 and 2 were used in conjunction we experienced similar network issues in the game. Devices disconnected from the network, response time was very slow.

We assume (not proven yet) it might be happening due to one of the following:
Computational limit of the wifi modem/router.
Computer services hogging the network when connected to the internet.

Actionable's:

  1. Trying out pi3 as a hotspot (crazy I know).
  2. Finding better monitoring tools for the network and running services.
  3. Finding a good local DNS software.
  4. Running more tests on each Hackathon to test possibile solutions and regression.
  5. Improving the test scenario to better pin point the source of failure

seperating the access point from the router under same conditioins that broke the network should clarify whatvthe root cause is.
