Description
It would be highly valuable to add an Orrery mode (a digital 3D Solar System view) to the app. This mode should allow users to:
-
View the entire Solar System from a distant vantage point (e.g., 30 AU from the Sun)
-
See accurate planetary orbits and positions
-
Pan, zoom, and rotate around the Sun or individual planets
-
Simulate planetary motions over time
-
Optionally, provide an eyepiece/ocular simulation for observing planets as they would appear through a telescope
Rationale / Benefits:
-
Provides an immersive heliocentric perspective, similar to historical orreries used by astronomers
-
Supports educational and observational planning purposes
-
Enhances the app’s capabilities for users interested in space navigation, planetary alignment, and Solar System visualization
-
Leveraging libraries like ERFA can ensure high-precision planetary positions
Suggested Implementation:
-
Implement a 3D mode toggle in the app (similar to “Occuly” or Stellarium’s Solar System view)
-
Use accurate ephemerides for planetary positions and motions
-
Allow camera control (orbit around Sun, follow a planet, free movement)
-
Optional overlays: orbital paths, planetary labels, moons
