Not allowed to use special characters in name

When attempting to add certain valid names such as Ali s/o Muthu, the application does not allow such names even though it is possible for these names to be the legal name of people.

Expected: Ali s/o Muthu is added to the contact list.
Actual: Application does not allow it.

Team's Response

We mentioned it specifically in our user guide that only alphanumeric characters are allowed for names as we believe that for our use case (restaurant bookings), legal names are not necessary for restaurant internal records. In fact, customers may not even give their full names when making a restaurant booking. Hence, we believe that our input validation is reasonable.

Reason for disagreement: As Singapore is a multicultural society with a diverse population, I believe that there is a need for a restaurant reservation management system to cater to the names that the customers would have, especially for our Malay and Indian Singaporeans. Other than the example given above, special characters such as apostrophes might be used in names as well. While these names are indeed only used for the restaurant's internal records, restaurant staff may end up misrepresenting customers, which might cause customers to feel disrespected. Even worse, restaurant staff might end up mispronouncing customer's names, causing a loss in customer loyalty to the restaurant. Therefore, I believe this is a valid feature flaw.
