Multiple Instances of IPS 3.x & 4.x

I posted about this on the MW extension page as well. The problem is that I have multiple instances of IPS forums software installed in preparing for a major site upgrade. I'm skeptical that this extension will work without any explicit definition of the IPS DB instance from which to read for Mediawiki auth. Can you help me understand? Thanks
