Ideas for implementation

Element selection:
Similar to how road surfaces are shown, a selection list with various materials pictured like:

• material=wood
• material=concrete
• material=metal
• material=stone
• material=plastic
• material=brick
• etc.

Metadata needed:
Maybe sorting the fences by the most common already in that country? Not really sure.

Proposed UI:
Similar to this, but with the fence materials pictured instead:

Sounds reasonable to me, if people find value in collecting that information.

If someone would find all (for all popular values that should be offered) appropriate pictures (i.e. discernible on such small sizes) which are freely licensed (i.e. from https://commons.wikimedia.org/ or taken by yourself) and link to them here, I can write the quest code itself (unless someone else prefers to do it themselves, of course!).

(note however that SCEE currently waits for certain upstream PR to complete, before new quests can be merged / new version of SCEE released. But pictures can be collected already)

From what I understood the PR might take much longer to be done (initially it was expected to be 1-2 months). So I plan to spend some time in January trying to get things in order.

Would it make sense to have two quests, one for fence type and one for material?
There could be some filtering which answers are allowed or whether the quest is asked at all depending on the answer to the other quest.

Yeah I like the idea of having 2 quests with some filtering based on existing tagging if present.

Something like fence_type=chain_link might only imply material=metal, but I'm not 100% certain on that. I know there is plastic coated chain link fences, but they usually have a metal core for the wire so not entirely sure how that fits in.

I do agree with the wiki for some of the fence types, like fence_type=concrete makes sense to me to just use material=concrete instead and leave the fence type for some more specific thing. fence_type= is an unsolved mess, while fence:type= still has problems (eg =metal ) on top of using a meaningless suffix https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposal:Fence_attributes
It did propose barrier:electric= , barrier:barbed_wire= , and barrier:barbed_tape= similar to others (as other barrier= can have these added https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:barrier#As_a_namespace

So, @Kovoschiz, do you have any particular suggestion how to handle this quest (or quests) then? Should be just ask "What material is this fence made of?" and tag material=* depending on the answer, and call it a day?

Or should we do something else (e.g. ask different question and tag multiple things at once; or have this material=* quest and one or more other quests related to barriers, or something else? Or just give up for now as it is too problematic at the moment?)

Personally prefer to start with material= in all barrier= first. It's acceptable to choose some of the fence_type= to use as a historical legacy. You have to think through it though.

• =bars : Photos and pool example don't look as thick as a "bar", overlapping with =railing
• =corrugated_metal : Contains =metal , although may group specific compounds as =steel
• =knee_rail : May be said as "knee railing" in overlap with the usual =railing
• =krest : National =railing style, and mixes different countries (Russia with France)
• =paling : Can be packed together ungapped resembling =panel , needs caution then careful close-up observation

• =pole : Poles are supporting other structures, or tightly packed ones are =paling
