That's a good idea! Let's use this issue to elabore the contents of the layover.
Regarding position and visualisation: I think the opener should be either a smoothly integrated button on the machine or completely decoupled from it in one of the page corners.

For the layover itself I had to think about the manual/circuit diagram of an old radio, e.g. like this:

As we want to fill the menu with actual information such a diagram is not very fitting but I'd like to use it as an inspiration. Maybe we could add some circuit-like lines in te background of the layover.
