@ottoxgam Thanks for the report and the second screenshot...that was enough info to ID this bug.

The SX1302 HAL returns every packet the demodulators see with a status field that's either CRC_OK (passed FEC check) or CRC_BAD (bit errors that survived FEC). It logs a warning when we see CRC_BAD (added in v0.7.0) but we still pass the packet downstream to the decoder. Fix is one place and will get this in the next patch release.

Two things that would help confirm in your environment:

Run journalctl -u meshpoint -n 500 | grep CRC_BAD and grab the count from the last hour. If you're seeing garbled text proportional to that count (each CRC_BAD packet attempting to decode), that confirms it. If the junky text is appearing without any CRC_BAD warnings nearby, there's something else going on.
Set MESHPOINT_DEBUG_RX=1 in your service environment and restart, then capture the next junk message. The full RX trace will show whether it came in CRC_OK or CRC_BAD.
Will leave this issue open and link the PR when the filter lands. Appreciate you reporting with both screenshots.

Looks like I'm getting CRC_BAD on most every packet coming in. I have seen a few more garbled messages. I'll work on getting the node in a better location to see if that helps with anything.

Looks like this packet was recieved 2x in the log, but only the garbled packet was sent to the UI

Update for anyone who hits this thread later: this is resolved by v0.7.2 (commit c5c0abf, PR #46).

The log lines posted earlier in this thread are the literal fingerprint of the bug. From the May 01 12:24:18 capture:

Pre-fix, SX1302Wrapper.receive() was logging the WARNING for STAT_CRC_BAD packets but still appending them to the returned packet list. The downstream Meshtastic decoder pulled the source-ID and channel-hash from the corrupted header, AES-CTR-XORed the corrupted ciphertext against the keystream, and produced mostly-correct plaintext with a few mangled bytes — exactly the "Heard dia�e�n �ar " symptom. When the same node retransmitted 6 seconds later as CRC_OK, the same packet decoded cleanly as "Heard diamond bar ".

Post-fix, that first WARNING line stands alone with no packet_router decoder line following it. The corrupted packet is dropped at the HAL boundary; only the CRC_OK retransmit reaches the decoder.

To pick up the fix:

The dashboard header should show 0.7.2 after restart. If you still see CRC_BAD WARNING lines (which is normal — RF noise produces these in any environment), they should now be unaccompanied by garbled >> PKT text lines. The orange update triangle on every Meshpoint dashboard will fire within 5 minutes of this comment, prompting users to upgrade.

Side bonus: this same fix also removes phantom node IDs that were being registered in your local SQLite from corrupted packets (visible as (NO NAME) rows in your nodes table sharing all-but-one bit with a real neighbor's ID). They'll age out of the 24-hour active window naturally; no manual cleanup needed.
