Problem

Nixpkgs has a policy to disallow the Import From Derivation (IFD) pattern, but the pattern itself is not documented in the Nixpkgs manual. A reference documentation in the Nixpkgs manual would naturally refer to the Nix manual for this feature.

Proposal

Expand the option documentation.
Include a description of what the performance penalties it entails, and show an example.
