Feature request: toggle edge/outline lines for STEP models #50

Hi Exhibit maintainers,

First off, thanks for Exhibit! I’ve been using it often lately and it’s been a great model viewer.

My request is as follows:
When viewing .stl files, models appear smooth and don’t show edge lines (which makes sense since STL is triangle mesh data and doesn’t carry the same face/edge topology as CAD formats like STEP). When viewing .stp/.step files, Exhibit renders edge/outline lines, which I can see being very useful in many cases.

That said, I often prefer the smoother “STL-like” look when I’m just inspecting the overall shape and don’t explicitly need edges. I’d love a way to toggle edge/outline lines on/off so STEP models can be viewed either with edges (current behavior) or as a clean shaded surface similar to STL.

Proposed UX suggestion:

A simple toggle in the UI (e.g., “Show edges” / “Edge lines”)

Expected behavior:

With edges off: STEP models render as smooth shaded surfaces without edge/outline lines

With edges on: current behavior remains unchanged

If this already exists and I’ve missed it, I’d appreciate a pointer to the setting. Thanks again for the project!

Respectfully,
Justin
