Number 100 is arbitrary here: could be e.g. 80, but the point is we should check that lines aren't too long which makes them hard to read.

I think this is a bad idea -- we discussed this in the practice and style book, and ISE (among others) don't give you rule lines, it's too hard to follow this rule, and provides no real benefit.

The main benefit of not writing too long lines of code is that scrolling horizontally to review the code is quite tedious.

Agree with @Jaykul. Even Code Analsis and StyleCop for C# do not attempt to enforce a line length.

I agree with @Jaykul as well. You can always create your own rule if things like this are important in your environment and apply it in that environment, but rules like this (style preferences) cannot exist globally for everyone.

In Visual Studio you can enable Word Wrapping which if brought to ISE & other tools would natively negate the need for this rule - suggested this in the PowerShellEditorServices Repo

My preference is that line lengths should be managed using a user-invoked code formatting routine in an editor rather than some rule which gives you a diagnostic for each long line.

I have to agree with everyone else in the thread here. Line length is definitely a best practice, but it varies greatly from project to project and should be enforced via some other means (like editor preferences), no different from indentation style/length or line termination format.

Unless anyone has any major objections, I'm going to close this one.

Did anyone find a nice way of measuring the length of the longest line? We are looking to enforce a line length, we are already using the built in ruler and have tried using "editor.wordWrapColumn" in VSCode but lots of people didn't really like the forced wrapping.

I have a horrible way of looking at the scriptblock and measuring each line, checking if it goes over the limit but this is fairly resource intensive and does not work particularly well with the extent.
