Incorrect Image Aspect Ratios

This issue has been thoroughly documented on a previous, closed thread: #20307. It is still a problem, as aspect ratios from, say, Giphy, are still extremely distorted.

It's possible that it's isolated to gifs, such as from /giphy? That's where I'm seeing it badly.

Just to confirm — is the distortion happening specifically for Giphy GIFs in the message list, or also for regular uploaded images?

Also, should the fix preserve the original aspect ratio (e.g., using object-fit or intrinsic sizing), or is there a specific expected behavior we should match?

It seems to happen for both Giphy and Tenor images. They are forced into a square aspect ratio no matter what the gif's original aspect ratio was. Upon further testing, this is not happening with regular uploaded images.

Yes, I observed the same behavior — the issue appears to be specific to externally sourced images (like Giphy and Tenor), where the rendering is constrained into a square layout.

I’ve submitted a fix that removes the fixed width/height constraints and allows images to preserve their intrinsic aspect ratio. Uploaded images remain unaffected.

Would appreciate any feedback on the approach!
