feat(api): abort signal support for poe (completePrompt + createMessage) - #1535
Adds abort-signal support to the Poe provider for both completePrompt and createMessage (round 1 of the abort-signal series).
Supersedes #1301 (split C of 3).#1301's combined gateway-a diff generated 518 mutation-diff preflight mutants, over the 400 cap. This PR carries the Poe portion only: +533/−77 across 2 files, 80 preflight mutants (well under the 400 cap; measured against main @ 0dbd5846f).
completePrompt
Accepts CompletePromptOptions (abortSignal and/or timeoutMs); the two are combined through the shared mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout (timeoutMs <= 0 disables the timeout; no manual cleanup needed — AbortSignal.timeout / AbortSignal.any handle the lifecycle).
If the caller's signal aborts (or the per-request timeout fires) while the request is in flight, the provider rejects with a DOM-standard AbortError (error.name === "AbortError") instead of a generic completion error.
If the request resolves after the abort, the late result is discarded and AbortError is thrown instead.
Reasoning parameter handling is preserved on the abort paths: the reasoning-effort path (incl. modelMaxTokens — a falsy value sets no maxOutputTokens) and the reasoning-budget path behave identically with and without abort options.
createMessage (new bridging)
Bridges the caller's metadata.abortSignal into a per-request AbortController (Bedrock pattern):
The request-local controller is captured by closure (not a mutable field), so concurrent requests do not interfere.
Pre-aborted guard: if the signal is already aborted, the stream rejects with AbortError immediately without calling the API.
The external listener is stored in a named const and removed in finally, so listeners never outlive the request.
The AI SDK request is driven by the controller's signal, and abort-driven stream failures are normalized to AbortError.
createMessage bridging: pre-aborted signal rejects with name === "AbortError" (no API call, no model fetch); mid-flight abort aborts the in-flight request and rejects the stream with name === "AbortError"; external listener removed after settlement; exact abort-error message asserted (The Poe request was aborted).
Part of the abort-signal series (round 1). Builds on #674, #901, #1008. Addresses #404. Supersedes #1301 (split C).
Updated this round (2026-10-13)
Merged current upstream main into the branch to clear the dirty state. One conflict (imports only) in poe.ts: main added the model-cache fetchModels (needs the getPoeModels import); this branch added the abort-signal utility imports. Kept both sides' imports.
Verification at this head: 38/38 green in poe.spec.ts; tsc --noEmit → 0 errors; per-file ESLint (--max-warnings=0) clean; prettier --check clean on touched files.
Split from Zoo-Code-Org#1301 (feat/abort-r1-gateway-a) so the mutation-diff preflight stays under the 400-mutant limit (the combined gateway-a diff generated 518).
Part of the abort-signal series (round 1). Addresses Zoo-Code-Org#404.
Poe requests can be cancelled before they begin or while they’re underway, with cancellations consistently reported as cancellation errors.
Caller-provided cancellation signals work alongside per-request timeouts. Non-positive timeout values disable the timeout.
Results arriving after cancellation are rejected, and streaming stops when a request is cancelled.
Timeouts are reported as timeout errors, while other failures continue to be reported as completion or streaming errors.
The Poe provider now propagates caller cancellation through createMessage and completePrompt. Streaming stops yielding chunks and usage after cancellation. Prompt completion combines caller signals with positive per-call timeouts and classifies cancellation outcomes.
createMessage bridges the caller signal and passes it to streamText. It stops yielding chunks and usage after cancellation, normalizes aborts, and removes the external listener. Tests cover cancellation timing, cleanup, errors, temperature, usage, and reasoning options.
Prompt completion abort and timeout src/api/providers/poe.ts, src/api/providers/__tests__/poe.spec.ts
completePrompt passes a merged signal to generateText when applicable. Non-positive timeouts are disabled. Tests cover caller aborts, timeout ordering, late results, signal selection, and non-abort failures.

Some caller cancellations may be reported as timeouts. The issue is narrow but should be addressed or accepted before merging.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🔵 Low · up to e5e08
Cancellation remains scoped to existing requests, with no demonstrated expansion of access or privileges. End-to-end cancellation guarantees remain partly unverified, so the assessment is low risk rather than minimal.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated new control affects requests associated with the supplied cancellation signal and their returned output. Request-local controllers do not introduce handler-wide cancellation authority; production caller identity and broader deployment exposure were not resolved.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Provider credentials and the configured destination remain constructor-owned. The changed request paths add cancellation signals without adding credential overrides, new tool authority, or provider-selection inputs.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The tests exercise late completion and cancellation during pending usage, but replace both generation entrypoints with mocks. They support output-suppression behavior without proving remote request termination or bounded settlement when downstream work stalls.

Explanation
The description is detailed and covers the linked issues, implementation approach, edge cases, tests, and verification results. It does not reproduce every template section, such as the completed checklist and explicit documentation-impact statement, but the core required information is present.
Full details: Security Boundaries
Explanation
No changed path meets a security-boundary failure condition. In src/api/providers/poe.ts:105-172, the PR bridges the caller AbortSignal and forwards it to the existing Poe SDK request. In :245-261, timeout input goes through mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout, which validates usable timeout values. The PR adds no secret or PII logging, dynamic execution, approval bypass, or allowlist bypass. The added test file contains no production path.
Full details: Persistence Integrity
Explanation
PASS. The changed provider path only manages Poe request creation, streaming, usage emission, and abort handling in createMessage and completePrompt. The diff adds no persistence write, transaction, rollback, or default-propagation path. The cache references are reads or unchanged surrounding model-cache handling. No changed persistence path can lose or corrupt state.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The changed createMessage behavior creates a request-local abort bridge for each invocation (src/api/providers/poe.ts:105-107). The required isolation between concurrent requests remains untested. poe.spec.ts covers single-stream cancellation and listener cleanup (:278-610), but has no test that starts two streams, aborts one signal, and verifies that the other stream continues. This is the same unresolved regression evidence from the standing failure.
Resolution
Add a focused PoeHandler unit test that starts two concurrent createMessage streams with separate abort signals, aborts one stream, and verifies that only that stream rejects with AbortError while the other stream completes normally.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The changed PoeHandler.createMessage path can leak its external abort listener during iterator disposal. The provider awaits result.fullStream.next() inside for await at src/api/providers/poe.ts:187, and removes the listener only in finally at lines 232-236. If a consumer calls .return() while that upstream read remains pending, async-generator disposal stays queued behind the read. The finally block does not run, the per-request controller is not aborted, and the caller's long-lived signal retains the listener and request closure. The current early-close test only calls .return() while the provider is suspended at its own yield, so it does not cover this path. A standalone reproduction of the same async-generator structure showed .return() unsettled, cleanup false, and upstream return() uncalled while next() remained pending. Repository code also explicitly disposes iterators with .return() in src/core/task/Task.ts:4572-4575.
Resolution
Make iterator disposal independent of a pending fullStream.next(). Return a cancellation-aware iterator or wrapper whose return() aborts the per-request controller before waiting for disposal, and invoke the upstream iterator's return() or cancellation method when available. Ensure the external abort listener is removed on this path. Add a regression test with a permanently pending fullStream.next() that calls .return() and verifies request cancellation, listener removal, upstream disposal, and completion of the disposal promise.

Apply the provider timeout fallback to Poe completePrompt, or correct the option contract.
CompletePromptOptions.timeoutMs says it falls back to the provider default when omitted. completePrompt passes only options?.timeoutMs to mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout, so an omitted timeout leaves the generateText call with no deadline. Either use options?.timeoutMs ?? this.timeoutMs and update the no-options test, or change the doc comment to match the no-timeout behavior.

Update Poe’s completePrompt method to pass options?.timeoutMs ?? this.timeoutMs
to mergeAbortSignalAndTimeout, preserving the provider default deadline when
callers omit a timeout.
Assert that streamText is not called in the pre-abort test.
The test rejects with AbortError when the external signal is pre-aborted checks that getModelsFromCache is not called. It does not check that streamText is not called. The current pre-abort guard throws before streamText runs, so a change that calls streamText before the guard would still throw AbortError and pass this test. Adding the assertion makes the test fail if a pre-aborted request reaches the API boundary. The clearAllMocks() call in beforeEach resets mockStreamText's call history, so the count starts at zero for each test.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The post-usage abort check only runs after result.usage settles. An abort while that promise is pending does not itself release the await or reject the stream.
Stream consumption remains hung after cancellation, with cleanup in finally delayed.
This can occur when: The stream ends, result.usage stays pending, and the external signal aborts.

Review threads on Zoo-Code-Org#1535 asked this provider to stop re-implementing helpers
the series already ships:
- createMessage bridges metadata.abortSignal through
bridgeExternalAbortSignal() and calls dispose() in finally, matching
anthropic.ts / xai.ts / minimax.ts. The hand-rolled listener bookkeeping
(and the { once: true } Stryker disable that excused it) is gone.
- completePrompt throws createTimeoutError("Poe", "completion request")
instead of a provider-local closure that duplicated the same name/message.
- Tests now cover the timeout path where the SDK rejects with AbortError
after the deadline fired (it.each over a late result and an AbortError
rejection), and the listener detach on stream failure and on early
generator return(), so the detach cannot move out of finally.
Verification (negative controls, each restored byte-identically afterwards):
- vitest api/providers/__tests__/poe.spec.ts: 43/43 pass.
- Dropping the catch-block timeout classification fails
"keeps TimeoutError when the timeout fires before a later caller abort and
late result" plus both it.each cases with
"expected AbortError: The Poe request was aborted to match object
{ name: 'TimeoutError', ... }".
- Removing the detach entirely fails all three removal tests
("Number of calls: 0"); moving it onto the success path fails exactly the
two new cases, which is the gap the reviewer pointed at.
- Swapping the shared helper's phase to "model discovery" fails the three
timeout tests on the message contract.
- src tsc --noEmit clean, eslint --max-warnings=0 clean, prettier --check
clean; poe.ts Stryker directives drop from 6 to 5 and no new "as any".
The local mutation preflight on the review fix flagged two surviving
StringLiteral mutants on the resolved-after-abort throw: the error raised
inside the try block is caught by the catch below and replaced by an
identical one, so nothing a caller or a test can see depends on its
arguments. Moving that classification after the catch removes the duplicate
classification path and makes the error built there the one the caller
receives, which the timeout tests already pin by name and message.
Behavior is unchanged: same errors, same order, no telemetry capture for
cancellations. vitest api/providers/__tests__/poe.spec.ts stays 43/43 green
and src tsc --noEmit is clean.
Warning annotations highlight up to 20 unique locations (maximum 7 per file). This summary lists every advisory mutant.

Add or strengthen a focused test that fails under the mutation. If the mutant is equivalent, request maintainer approval for the narrowest mutator-specific exclusion and explain why it cannot change behavior:

… test
Upstream adds a no-restricted-globals rule for setTimeout under
api/**/__tests__/**/*.spec.ts ("Poll with vi.waitFor on the observable condition"),
and the merged-ref lint job enforces it, so this branch's fixed 40 ms sleep in
"keeps TimeoutError when the timeout fires before a later caller abort and late
result" fails compile. The observable condition is available: the merged signal
aborting IS the 20 ms per-request timeout firing, so the SDK double now polls
that (the house pattern, e.g. request-config-builder.spec.ts:408) before the
caller aborts and the result settles late. Ordering is pinned rather than timed.
api/providers/__tests__/poe.spec.ts: 43/43 green; src tsc --noEmit and eslint

Classify the source of the abort, not its reason name.
If a caller aborts options.abortSignal with a reason named TimeoutError, abortedByTimeout() returns true even when timeoutMs is absent. completePrompt then reports a Poe completion timeout instead of the caller’s AbortError. Node permits caller-supplied abort reasons, and the merge helper preserves the caller signal when no timeout is set. Track whether the per-request timeout signal fired first. Add a caller-reason regression test. (nodejs.org)

Review comment at @src/api/providers/poe.ts around lines 252 - 254:
Update abortedByTimeout to determine whether the per-request timeout signal
fired, rather than inferring the abort source from the merged signal’s reason
name; preserve caller-abort classification when no request timeout fired. Add a
regression test confirming that a caller-supplied TimeoutError reason is
reported as a caller abort.

Adds abort-signal support to the Poe provider for both
completePromptandcreateMessage(round 1 of the abort-signal series).Supersedes #1301 (split C of 3). #1301's combined gateway-a diff generated 518 mutation-diff preflight mutants, over the 400 cap. This PR carries the Poe portion only: +533/−77 across 2 files, 80 preflight mutants (well under the 400 cap; measured against
main@0dbd5846f).completePrompt
CompletePromptOptions(abortSignaland/ortimeoutMs); the two are combined through the sharedmergeAbortSignalAndTimeout(timeoutMs <= 0disables the timeout; no manual cleanup needed —AbortSignal.timeout/AbortSignal.anyhandle the lifecycle).AbortError(error.name === "AbortError") instead of a generic completion error.AbortErroris thrown instead.modelMaxTokens— a falsy value sets nomaxOutputTokens) and the reasoning-budget path behave identically with and without abort options.createMessage (new bridging)
Bridges the caller's
metadata.abortSignalinto a per-requestAbortController(Bedrock pattern):AbortErrorimmediately without calling the API.finally, so listeners never outlive the request.AbortError.Tests
completePrompt: signal/timeout pass-through viamergeAbortSignalAndTimeout, timeoutMs <= 0/ no-options backward compatibility, pre-aborted reject, mid-flight abort reject, late-result discard, reasoning-effort/budget parameter preservation on abort.createMessagebridging: pre-aborted signal rejects withname === "AbortError"(no API call, no model fetch); mid-flight abort aborts the in-flight request and rejects the stream withname === "AbortError"; external listener removed after settlement; exact abort-error message asserted (The Poe request was aborted).Part of the abort-signal series (round 1). Builds on #674, #901, #1008. Addresses #404. Supersedes #1301 (split C).

maininto the branch to clear the dirty state. One conflict (imports only) inpoe.ts: main added the model-cachefetchModels(needs thegetPoeModelsimport); this branch added the abort-signal utility imports. Kept both sides' imports.Verification at this head: 38/38 green in
