feat(task): auto-generate session title from the first user message - #2336
This PR adds an automatic title for new root tasks.
src/core/task/session-title.ts is new. It sends one single-shot completion with a 15-second limit. It removes <system-reminder> blocks from the user message first. If the model fails or returns nothing usable, it uses the first 42 characters of the message as the title.
Task.startTask starts the generation after the first message is stored. The call is fire-and-forget, so the task never waits for it. Only root tasks start it. Resumed tasks and subtasks keep their names.
ClineProvider.applySessionTitle writes the title inside the atomicReadAndUpdate lock. It writes only if the item has no title. A manual rename that lands during generation always wins. The title write is retried up to 3 times on a transient failure.
Please check these points with care:
updateTaskHistory still does not own the title field. Only the rename path and applySessionTitle write it. I updated the comment to say this.
A conflict is signaled with SessionTitleConflictError thrown inside the lock. This avoids a disk write of an unchanged record.
Test Procedure
Automated tests (from src):
npx vitest run core/task/__tests__/session-title.spec.ts core/task/__tests__/Task.session-title.spec.ts core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.taskHistory.spec.ts
Result: 3 files, 84 tests, all pass.
The tests cover:
Sanitizing of the user message, the LLM title, and the fallback title.
The timeout and the retry of the title write.
The trigger rules: root task starts it, resume and subtask do not.
applySessionTitle: applied, conflict with an existing title, and a blank title.
Manual steps: start a new task with a long first message. Check that the task list shows a short title. Rename a task while the title generates and check that the manual name stays.

New Features
New root tasks can receive an automatically generated session title based on the first message, without delaying the task from starting.
If a generated title is unavailable, a shortened version of the message may be used instead.
Existing titles are preserved, and pending title generation stops when a task is renamed or deleted.
New root tasks generate a session title from the first user message without delaying the task loop. The title is applied only when unset, with fallback generation, write retries, and cancellation on task rename or deletion.

Conditional title persistence src/core/task-persistence/TaskHistoryStore.ts, src/core/task-persistence/__tests__/TaskHistoryStore.crossInstance.spec.ts
setTitleIfUnset checks cached and on-disk titles before writing. It returns a conflict for missing or already-titled disk records, updates the cache after successful writes, and propagates unexpected write errors.
Title generation and fallback src/core/task/session-title.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/session-title.spec.ts
The generator sanitizes the first message, extracts an LLM title or creates a 42-character fallback, and applies titles with retries. It skips duplicate in-flight requests and supports cancellation and a 15-second timeout.
Task startup and title application src/core/task/Task.ts, src/core/task/__tests__/Task.session-title.spec.ts, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.taskHistory.spec.ts
Root-task startup launches generation after storing the first message without awaiting it. ClineProvider applies titles and updates the launched view. Rename and deletion cancel pending generation.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review d7882
Automatic titles can contain reminder text, remain missing after a transient save failure, or behave inconsistently across windows. Slow title requests can also continue after cancellation. These are bounded issues rather than task-execution blockers; merging carries low risk with explicit ownership of the fixes and missing regression coverage.

Explanation
[ #2333 ] Root tasks start title generation in the background. The prompt requests 5–10 words in the user's language. The code applies titles under a store lock, protects manual renames, and excludes resumed tasks and subtasks. Tests cover timeout, fallback, trigger rules, and title conflicts. However, generateSessionTitle skips the model whenever rateLimitSeconds > 0 and uses the first 42 characters instead. Those users do not receive the requested generated title, even when the model is available.
Resolution
Generate a short model title for new root tasks with a positive rateLimitSeconds setting, without blocking the task. Add automated coverage for that setting.
Full details: Regression Evidence
Explanation
The 15-second title-request limit lacks an independent test. session-title.ts:7,171-178 sets and uses the limit, but session-title.spec.ts:163,235 derives its assertions and timer advance from the same constant. An incorrect limit could pass both tests.
Resolution
Add a test that uses an independent 15,000 ms expectation and checks fallback at the timeout boundary.
Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup
Explanation
The new title request can outlive cancellation and disposal. - session-title.ts:169-193 races the request against cancellation, but openai.ts:357-378 ignores the abort signal. If a user renames or deletes a task, or the title request times out, the HTTP request continues and singleCompletionHandler cannot dispose its handler until it settles. - Task.ts:3126-3134 starts title generation without linking it to task disposal. If the task or provider is disposed while generation is pending, the request can continue and apply a title through the disposed provider.
Resolution
Connect title generation to task and provider disposal, and prevent it from starting after disposal. Make each supported completion provider honor the abort signal and timeout so cancellation stops the underlying request and releases its handler.
