astroquery dev version is different on PyPI vs local build

As reported by @mkelley , at the time of writing:

• PyPI: https://pypi.org/project/astroquery/0.4.12.dev10784 (Apr 2026)
• Local dev version from main: 0.4.12.dev531+g1ad1025d5

Questions:

• Where did the dev10784 numbering come from?
• How does one compare versions between PyPI release and local dev build?

That is a number of commits since the beginning. We have that dev version versioning string for a long time and it hasn't changed once we recently switched out from using astropy_helpers.

How does one compare versions between PyPI release and local dev build?

Should be the same if you build locally and install from that source distribution rather than install directly from the source checkout or as editable. I'll look into to use the same formatting for these local builds or change both to something sensible.

Note: the whole versioning is to be changed to switch to a date or partly date based versioning.
