Configuration:

  • Windows 11
  • balenaEtcher 2.1.0
  • Image to be flashed: .wic file present inside a WSL directory
  • Target: SD card placed inside the inbuilt SD card reader

Observation:

  • Admin login prompt appears after pressing flash
  • After accepting the credentials, the progress bar stays stuck at 0% and doesn't proceed
  • A workaround was to copy the entire .wic image file from the WSL directory to windows 11, and then flash into the SD card

This is probably because the Etcher GUI is running as a "normal" user who can see the "WSL directory", but the flashing-part of Etcher is using an "elevated" user who can't see the WSL directory? The same thing often happens with SUBST drives or Network drives.

Etcher is using an "elevated" user who can't see the WSL directory?

Indeed the case I think, the filepath could be valid, but might not have access to the image in principle. Should such an issue raise a warning? Should I close this issue?
