Somehow the track number is identified as the artist when importing. What am I doing wrong?
It is extremely frustrating to import like this.
Im very new to beets, and have struggled with this problem before and quit trying to learn beets for a few months.
Id be very grateful for your help as I can't imaging beets failing with something like this

Wherever possible, import as albums (not singletons). You can try disabling the fromfilename plugin.

Thank you for your fast reply! This relates to another question I have. Since most of my collection consists of singletons I thought it makes sense to sort music like artist>track rather than artist>album>track.

Does beets support such a file structure? Sometimes, as here, I got the impression lots of beets features are closely tied to the usual artist>album>track filestructure.

It doesn't have to be artist>album>track. My library (mostly Indian music, which is organized around album), is organized as Alphabet>Album>Track (where Alphabet is the first letter of the album name).

Artist>track does not make sense as you combine multiple albums in that case, which will be impossible to read in any player (e.g., Plex or Navidrome).

Your collection is not singletons, but incomplete albums. Thus, I would suggest you use the more traditional artist>album>track structure.

Many players understand singleton collections just fine. Some may be more album-minded and that may not be the players that works in this case. But plenty of players can handle it.

Also, the comment about the collection not being singletons is a bit shortsighted. Have you seen the collection? Sure, in theory the remark is correct, but when someone has a lot of tracks that doesn't make complete albums, it's safe to say that it is a collection of singletons. And it is fine for someone to want a singleton-focused library. Beets doesn't mind at least.

beets can work with singletons just fine. You don't need to import them as albums. Just make sure that you run beet import with the -s argument. It will not include album-metadata in the tagging though.

Check the extended documentation about path formatting, make sure that it reflects your wishes.

For importing it's important to keep in mind that beets uses metadata that's already in the files. With the fromfilename plugin, it's important that the filenames are helping the guesser as much as possible (at least clean up parts that can confuse it, i.e. tracknumbers).
