Some ideas for further developments. Feel free to send patches, documentation or more ideas:

Create a mechanism to select which options should appear in the contextual menu.
Open and close all layers: see [thread in mailinglist] (http://listserv.gva.es/pipermail/gvsig_usuarios/2011-July/019105.html).
Clone layers (to have the layer twice in the toc)
Open (close) Edition on active layers
Show the total amount of features for each layer (see QGIS toc menu for an example).
Drag-drop to add a layer to the locator
Integrate the "Data tool" into the TOC (maybe within a new tab): see a reference
Layer One Position Up, Layer One Position Down, and send layer to last position on toc. Suggested by Vanesa Ross
Put all the options like "Show all, Show nothing, .." under a submenu. Suggested by Nacho Varela.
Allow set the color of the TOC background, or put it white. Suggested by Gonzalo Martínez.
List the layers of the TOC in ascending/descending (A-Z, Z-A, 1-n, n-1) order. Suggested by José Antonio Canalejo
I also think some options could be placed in a submenu. Suggested by José Antonio Canalejo.
