Lost connection causes deletion of all content from database

When enabling the encryption on the field, the key server had connection issues and rather than stopping it replaced all the content in the database with NULL.... WHOOPS!

There are definitely some issues with verifying that the connection was successful, but I wasn't able to reproduce this exact problem. I think we should create a flow chart to identify possible points of failure and figure out how to address them.
