⚬ PROBLEM:
The YouTube settings menu is becoming too crowded as more features are added. Most users rarely or never adjust options like Ambient Mode, annotations, playback speed, etc., after they’ve set them once. This creates unnecessary complexity.
⚬ SOLUTION:
Introduce an option to hide settings that users don’t regularly use, such as sleeper timer, Ambient Mode, annotations, subtitles, and playback speed. This idea builds on the existing "Hide player control buttons" feature, so it is technically feasible.
⚬ ALTERNATIVES:
Move commonly used options (like resolution and playback speed) outside of the settings menu and onto the control bar for easy access, similar to how other controls are already positioned.
Make these controls customizable so users can choose what they want in the control bar.
example like this
⚬ RELEVANCE / SCOPE:
Many users likely don’t touch settings like the sleeper timer or Ambient Mode regularly, so offering an option to hide these features would make the interface cleaner for at least half of YouTube users. This would improve user experience without compromising on flexibility, as users who prefer these settings can still enable them.
⚬ SIDE EFFECTS:
The impact would be minimal since users who want the features can still enable them. Those who don’t want to see the extra controls would have a cleaner, more focused experience.
⚬ CONTEXT:
By allowing users to customize their experience, the interface becomes more intuitive and user-friendly, preventing confusion for those who find the current settings overwhelming. This would particularly benefit users who have no use for certain options like Ambient Mode on devices like PCs.
SHORT Table | (Summary)
Problem: YouTube settings menu is overcrowded with rarely used features.
Solution: Allow users to hide unused options like Ambient Mode, subtitles, and timers.
Alternatives: Move frequently used settings (e.g., resolution, playback speed) to the control bar.
Scope: Likely beneficial to at least half of YouTube users who don’t need all settings visible.
Side effects: Minimal, since users can easily enable or disable the features as needed.
Context: Would improve interface simplicity and reduce unnecessary clutter for many users.
PS already paid 9 AU
