An enhanced, customisable, out-of-the box whole site search (still restricted to specific sections as currently) would be a huge benefit to Craft, in my opinion. The context described below is using a search box as a site search to find entries/pages so end users can find content quickly and easily.
Currently there are some issues with the existing search as a site search, and changing these does not appear to be trivial:
- It defaults to an AND search, whereas an option to configure this (in the control panel) to be either AND or OR, and with quotes for a PHRASE search, would be great
- It defaults to full word search, whereas the ability to customise and set part-word searching would be great e.g. apple would find apples
- Currently if there are two or more words entered into the search box these two words have to be in the same field otherwise the entry is not found. If this was effected it would allow the use of additional fields like Tags or say Additional Words to be much more useful in making search effective. Any added words are not helpful if the user types and additional word in a different field
- There doesn't seem to be an easy way to understand and/or manipulate the search rankings for particular terms. Content owners should be able to guarantee particular pages will rank first, or as "best bets" when certain key words are used for searching.
