Local-first AI agent memory - love the offline approach! + Debo connection #1

Description

Hey! 👋

I'm Shaswat, building Debo - and your Awareness-Local project with local-first AI agent memory really caught my attention!

What Awareness-Local Does

From the README:

  • Local-first AI agent memory
  • One command, works offline, no account needed
  • Gives Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, OpenClaw agents persistent memory
  • Markdown storage with hybrid search (FTS5 + embedding)
  • MCP protocol support
  • Web dashboard for visualization

What Debo Does

Debo is a life intelligence system for humans (parallel challenges!):

Core Features:

  • AI Memory Engine: Extracts durable memories from journal entries
  • Ask Your Life: Q&A with citations
  • Pattern Detection: Surfaces habits across time
  • Memory Graph: Connections between people, topics, emotions
  • Privacy First: Encrypted, user-owned data

Tech Stack:

  • Next.js 16, React 19, Tailwind v4
  • Qdrant (vectors), Neon Postgres + Drizzle ORM
  • Vercel AI SDK + Cloudflare Gateway
  • LiveKit for voice

Why Local-First Matters

Your focus on local-first, offline-capable memory is brilliant:

  • Privacy by design - data stays local
  • No vendor lock-in - users own their data
  • Works offline - critical for reliability
  • Markdown storage - simple, portable, human-readable

This aligns perfectly with Debo's philosophy!

Why I'm Reaching Out

  1. Shared values - privacy, local control, user ownership
  2. Similar challenges - memory extraction, retrieval, hybrid search
  3. Different domains - agent memory vs human life memory
  4. Learn from each other - FTS5 + embeddings approach is interesting!
  5. Potential collaboration - local-first memory patterns?
  6. Invite contributions - if you find Debo interesting

Questions

  1. Why FTS5 + embeddings for hybrid search?
  2. How do you handle sync when online?
  3. What's the performance like with large memory stores?
  4. Any plans for multi-agent memory sharing?

No pressure - just wanted to connect with someone building thoughtful local-first memory systems!

Best,
