can I "push" an image update for a "now playing" plug-in?

Semi-beginner python programmer here....

I have some python code that polls my media player and if the song has changed it grabs the cover art etc and updates the display with the new info. To make this useful for inkyPi, I would want to push an image update instead of waiting for the (hourly or whatever) update.

Doable? Any examples welcome.
