feedback from WWW hack night in sf — someone wanted to put the server into a current directory. when they typed "." as the directory, they got "directory already exists" and he was like "yes that's the point"
however i do think that resolving this is a little tricky, because if we don't control directly creation we open the possibility of overwriting files, including git, which no me gusta
