How to use environment variables with a source installation

Hi,
First of all thanks for the good work, I just had a question on how to use environment variables with a source installation.
My question is similar to #4613, but nobody answered it aside the bot, and I am still not sure if the substitution is handled by homepage installed via source.
The idea would like to do as mentionned in docker install, be able to substitute env variables to values in the config.yaml file. I tried several differents methods, none of them worked

I think I got it to work, by using the .env file in the config folder, and setting all variables name to HOMEPAGE_VAR_XXX (as described in the doc for docker)
