Git gutter annotations no longer appear

A few weeks ago the Git-related gutter annotations indicating which lines have been modified suddenly stopped appearing in VSCode (in all folders/windows) and I have been unable to figure out how to reenable them. This happened while I was typing in a window, so it's possible that I accidentally typed a keystroke combination that disabled them, but so far I have not been able to identify such a keystroke or how to undo it. I have checked the settings to confirm that git.decorations.enabled is still set (it is). Git works fine outside of VSCode and indicates that lines have been modified, but no annotations appear in VSCode.

Any suggestions for how to restore the gutter annotations would be much appreciated.
