Not building latest version of Samba

Right now, we're building Samba 4.8

This is quite out of date, so I need to look into building the latest version of Samba. Investigate how much more of the precious ramdisk it would need, and if it's feasible to use a newer version without running out of space

So, I'm using 2.1 b2 with latest Samba, it is working great so far. I'm getting consistent 12-15MB per second. Waiting for the first backup to hopefully complete properly. Then, move on to the second computer. No bugs so far for me at least. If anything, I couldn't believe it to see consistent 12-15MB/s speeds for the backups. Of course, it hovers around but I had never seen this before. Where it went by 1-2MB/s and then stalled.

I've tried all the older versions and the backups failed, stalled and never completed constantly. On two different MacBook Pro's. Running the latest beta of MacOS.

So, the backup didn't complete. I got the typical notification. But at least it copied a good chunk of data. I would say still far better than the barely no data moving.

This time at least it dropped gracefully and pretty fast. Otherwise on previous versions, it would have stalled for hours before failing to backup with the notification.

Edit: Started the backup again. Getting consistent speeds 15MB/s. Even went up to 17-18MB/s. Transferred at least 30GB data before. Now, already at 5GB in 5 mins or so.

For the first time, full backup done. With 2.1.0 b2. Excited about the future updates which should only make it better!

@khurrraam can you verify the backup and see if it correctly verifies?

Yes, verified it twice today. I've set it on daily backups so that I can see if it fails. No failures yet. The only time it happened was during the 414.41GB backup. Restarting it worked just fine. The updated Samba is really made the difference.

Before that as I said, the backups kept failing and never even got close to 50GB of backup.
