Setting the commit date?

Is there a way to set the author/commit date manually? I tried setting the appropriate environment variables, as should work in the command line version, but the commit is still made with the current date and time.

from os import environ

fake_date = "2015-05-01T10:00:00 +02:00"
environ["GIT_AUTHOR_DATE"] = fake_date
environ["GIT_COMMITTER_DATE"] = fake_date

repo.create_commit(ref, author, committer, message, tree, parents)
