GitHub recently published quite some materials, e.g. courses and videos, on GitHub Lab. I think they did a great job overall, especially videos are very well-produced and friendly for beginners.

Of course a section on Git! Relates to version control and requires some explanation of how it works (branching) and where to start.
Note: Won't talk about subversion elsewhere because (a) it is centralized and hence (b) has less functionality for individual researchers.
