The definition of soil matrix colour in Milne et al (1995) excludes consideration of redox mottles, even if they are areally dominant. This may be out of step with some other standards, which generally don't have a very clear statement of what the matrix colour is. Experience suggests this leads to some jurisdictions defining the matrix as the areally dominant colour regardless of origin, or recording all the common colours seen.
Do we need to review this definition? Note that this potentially affects the assessment of soil drainage.
