This is possibly the wrong place to ask but I don't find a better place to the answer to my question.

Why is the content of posts which are public hidden?

For me I'm on mastodon.social and when I use the official iOS app my own public posts are hidden. This is without a setting to change the hidden status of said content in the app. This plus the fact that you must reveal every single post you want to see makes the app a hassle to use.

I can think that this is because of privacy but creates also a weird situation where a profile or a post can be publicly accessible via e.g. Google or direct link but it is hidden for the specific user in the official Mastodon app.
