add parametter for wait / delay between tests

Hi,

Today I've added sipsak in my Smokeping server. There is one improvement i would like to request. I hope you are open to the suggestion.

As you may know, Smokeping monitors servers 24/7. By default it sends it's "pings" quickly after eachother and then waits for the next period to start. I've changed this behaviour for the normal pings to be spread out over time. Example: 20 pings per 300 seconds would mean an interval of 15 seconds. But that would leave no time for the RTT. So my ping delays are on 14 seconds.

I would love for it to be possible for sipsak to also have an option for a delay between the OPTIONS pings.. In fping it is called hostinterval.

I'm trying to understand better how you are using sipsak first. Just a basic OPTIONS ping only sends one request and waits for one reply. Are you using the -A option and needed delays between these requests?

Hi Nils, Thanks for responding. Yes, withing Smokeping I'm using sipsak as a "probe". It will send out 5 sip OPTIONS pings every 5 minutes. My expectation is that it does indeed use the command saying it should do 5 tests. I would love there to be a parameter to have a configurable delay between the attempts. Instead of doing 5 test and wait for nearly 5 minutes I would like it to do 5 tests with a 60 second delay between them. Let me add a screenshot so you can get an impression of the result as it is now. Maybe you'll fall in love with the tool too :) [image: image.png] See the legend at the bottom. Reading https://oss.oetiker.ch/smokeping/probe/SipSak.en.html it looks to me like you should be able to achieve what you are looking for with the 'offset' and 'step' configuration parameters. But it is also possible that I'm mis-reading this.
It is doesn't look like smokeping uses sipsak's -A option though.

These 2 parameters have a different function. offset is to spread the start of multiple probes of the same kind so they do not hit the network at thhe exact same time. Step is the time between messurement inntervals. Typically 300 seconds.

Smokeping used this as a command:
/usr/bin/sipsak -vv -A 5 -s sip:nobody@sip1.budgetphone.nl:5060

Smokeping does allow to configure any other sipsak parameters so if a delay/wait could be introduced in sipsak I think I could get smokeping to do as I'd like.
