Which is the recommended version for 10.6 with gcc (not clang)? #49

@nst I am interested to get it working on 10.6 powerpc – as compared to x86, clang cannot be used (so no ARC and no blocks).
I tried 8b5101a commit, which is prior to ARC conversion, but it still fails.
What is the recommended version to try?
Or if compatibility can be restored to a later version, that would be awesome.
