Concourse CI bypass Github Branch Protection

This is just a quick question. Do I need to make Concourse a Github App to bypass branch protection for a private repo?

No, you shouldn't have to go that far. Whatever user your auth is tied in the git resource (I assume you're using the git resource here) to would need to have the right permissions in GitHub for bypassing branch protection.
