Some other integration I would suggest is https://uptimerobot.com
with there api and some small about of js you can add some status indicators at the top of the page below is a example

I'm interested in contribute - how does the sms and email integration should work?

Hi. I'm guessing via a third party such as sendgrid for email or twilio for SMS messaging. So basically just an API call. Unless anyone has any better ideas for this?
