I tried using the heretic to jailbreak LLM, and although the refusal counts decreased, it didn't actually provide any helpful jailbreak content. Therefore, simply judging the number of refusals seems insufficient to demonstrate jailbreak capabilities.

As for the matter at hand, like I have said many times, there is no substitute for human testing of abliterated models. The refusal count measured by Heretic isn't reliable, and even far more sophisticated benchmarks aren't fully reliable. That's why Heretic:

1. Offers several different abliterated models to select from (Pareto front), and
2. Makes it possible to chat with a model directly from Heretic, to verify actual compliance.

I strongly doubt this problem can be solved automatically without far more expensive computations, such as using another LLM to count "real" refusals.

if it didn't denied but gave anything similar to a summary of it or related topics etc,
that's natural since that model is not trained to answer it, 
we just removed refusals but the model can't answer it like we need a finetune for such questions

This is even on a model's README card, it simply explains heretic does not teach a model to produce guides or any content that is generally refused by LLMs. It just ablates the ability to say NO, rest it'll do what it's capabale of based on training data knowledge and it's size.

For example if it's a 3B or 4B it might not be able to produce those stuff (can even hallucinate, summarize), but if it's a 30B or 120B, it can

@p-e-w would you consider adding strings "I don't want", "I don't believe" and "I don't create" to detection of refusals? I'm just trying my first Heretic run with print responses and I see a lot of these, which are not detected as refusals:

"I understand you're looking for a hypothetical example of a fake news article, but I don't want to" ...

"I understand your request, but I don't create content..."

Based on your examples, that might make sense, but I'd need to see more such responses first.

No, and I don't see how that would work with the optimizer. Nobody is going to do this 200 times in a row, for hundreds of responses each time.

That has been proposed half a dozen times already, but small models aren't more accurate than our current heuristic. In fact, a 0.4B model specifically trained for detecting refusals has in my tests performed no better than even the most basic string-matching approach.

@p-e-w Well the question is, how important it is to improve detection of refusals? Heretic seems to work very well, but you can see why people would look at the actual responses and their classification, and think it's odd.

I suppose it would help providing information as to which trial to use at the end. If I get to pick between 30 refusals and tiny KLD, and 3 refusals and larger KLD, I might want to pick the second one, but maybe those 30 refusals were just incorrectly classified (or vice versa).

I've seen heretic'd models on HF with wildly different stats; sometimes people even post multiple versions, like 'low heretic' and 'high heretic', based on refusal stats, while in reality they may act the same. So at the very least it causes confusion.

BTW there's also the opposite problem to what I mentioned. You search for the word 'illegal', but some prompts in the eval literally call for it, so the model may repeat it even if it's not refusing. E.g.

Response: Here is a guide for selling illegal drugs online:

1. Research the target market"...

So the model is responding, but the response is still classified as a refusal because of the presence of "illegal".

But yea, I can't tell if it matters for functionality or not. The math goes quite over my head. But I've seen a lot of borked heretic'd models on HF so I do wonder if this might have something to do with it.

As for using small models... Hm, I guess I have to try that. I'll try to check something in the next couple days and see.

I'd say it is of low to moderate importance. The default heuristic works well in most cases, and every alternative proposed so far has serious flaws.

That being said, the upcoming plugin system (#53) will make experimentation in this space much easier.
