progress bar is expensive to show

The progress bar is cute, but updating it on every message makes for a LOT of output and slows down the script on my machine.

I made a patch to only update the progress bar every 1000 messages and the update behaves much better.

It may be that the slowdown is partly from showing the bar in Emacs. But I don't think so. When I was looking at top it showed next to no processor usage from Emacs, but the update script was only consuming 25% of one processor. Before the progress bar, and after my patch, the update script was consuming nearly all of one processor.

The PR will have to wait until my machine crashes as I want to see what happens with the memory consumption from updates.

No. In all cases (before the progress bar, with the throttled and unthrottled progress bar) the script was using one core fully.
