getmail package dropped from archlinux repositories

Hi,

Since mailwizard depends on getmail - which in turn depends on python2 - are you by any chance aware of a possible replacement ?

getmail has been removed from the Arch repos, causing the mailwizard{,-git} AUR packages to break. For the time being, I've packaged getmail and pushed it to AUR, to keep them alive.
However, Arch is moving towards deprecating Python 2, hence this can only be a provisional solution.

As far as I'm aware, there's no Python 3 compatible getmail version upcoming. Do you think there's a way to move away from this dependency and to keep mailwizard available for Arch (and other progressive distros) ?

Thanks for the heads-up.
I will soon find time for mailwizard again and look into this.
Currently I don't know of any alternative to getmail.
It shouldn't be hard to port it to Python 3.
Maybe that is a way to go.

I've modified getmail to work with Python 3.

It works for me, but it should have some more tests.
I didn't change the basic code,
which was stabilized over a long time by the community.
But I might have missed some places regarding Python2/3 compatibility.
The bugs originating from them should be easy to fix, which I can do.

There are no test scripts, which could have surfaced conversion bugs right away.
Adding full coverage testing would result in a lot of code change.
I will not do that.

Now, the problem, that Archlinux has dropped getmail, still remains.
I wonder whether they would take this version in again, as it supports Python 3.

I'll do some more testing on my end probably the upcoming weekend, and then package your Python 3 port for the AUR as well as patch the mailwizard{,-git} packages to depend on that one. Then we're fully Python 2 independent.

I agree it would be nice to have the Python 3 version of getmail in the Arch repos. It's not much of a problem for mailwizard though that it is not, because we can still have it in the AUR.
On the other hand: maybe it's worth considering to propose the fork to the Arch devs/TUs at a later point, when it's proven to be stable enough.

I've pushed your Python 3 port to the AUR as a -git package since there's no release tarball which a versioned package could pull.

Works fine for me w/o any issue so far, though I haven't tested very thoroughly. I've set up a dedicated POP3 account for testing since I only use IMAP otherwise, on my main mail servers.

However, mailwizard{,-git} both now depend on your getmail port, hence all connections to Python 2 are removed. 👍
