BCB SGS API Reference Guide

Developer reference for the SGS (Sistema Gerenciador de Series Temporais) API from the Banco Central do Brasil.

data — date in DD/MM/YYYY format (string)
valor — value as string (convert to float for calculations)

API Limits and Notes

Date range limit (since March 2025): queries on daily series are capped at 10 years and must include dataInicial; otherwise the API returns HTTP 406 with a JSON body (error, message, syntax) explaining the rule.
Rate limiting: HTTP 429 on excessive requests (no official limit documented).
Dates use DD/MM/YYYY (Brazilian format). The bcbpy client also accepts YYYY-MM-DD for convenience.
Invalid series codes get HTTP 200 with an HTML "Requisição inválida!" page after ~30 seconds, not a 404 (observed September 2026).
Empty arrays are returned when a valid series has no data in the requested range.

Real Exchange Rate Indices (IPCA-based)

All five indices use June 1994 = 100. Only the basket index is effective; the currency-specific indices are bilateral. Names verified against SGS getUltimoValorXML on 2026-09-29.

Registry key migration (3.0)

Seven misleading keys were removed in 3.0. See the complete migration table in the README for their replacements. Update category and ALL_CODES lookups, stored key names, and search terms. Numeric codes and fetched data are unchanged.
