A pair-programming event can be a great way to get participants of all skill levels to interact with one and other. The basic idea is to give participants a programming challenge, and have them solve it together in pairs. See the Guide to Organizing Pair Programming Events for details.

Raffler provides a way to raffle among attendees of your meetup.

We at Slovenia Ruby User Group have several things to give away each time, so we made a simple app that raffles
n
people from everyone who attended on meetup.com. You can just go to the website, input your meetup.com Group URL Name or ID and select the meetup. Here's an example for our October meetup. You can deselect the people you don't want raffled (like organisers) then input the number of the rewards you have and click
Raffle
. It's that easy.

BTW PRs are wellcome!

Robotwars gives you a virtual battlefield where you program an AI tank and pit it against your opponents.

To run this for your own meetup, just point people to the github link above, all the instructions are on it. The tricky thing is setting up a server
to host the battles on. When we ran this in Christchurch (New Zealand) we also had a server available here
however, it's not going to work out of the box. Other meetups have had success allowing people to just commit their tanks to a common repo and then pulling them in.

If you happen to want to be a hero and the infrastructure linked to above, make it all Docker'y 'n stuff that would be awesome. However, as is it's pretty usable

Here's a video of one of our battles.

Rubywarrior Scoreboard is a scoreboard website for ruby-warrior. If you haven't seen
ruby-warrior, well, you play a little @ symbol battling its way past slime, archers and wizards, rescuing captives along the way. Originally created by
Ryan Bates, it's a great learning tool, and more than enough to keep a meetup occupied for a few hours.

The website above needs to be used with the scoreboard_rubywarrior gem which wraps
Ryans gem and allows posting of results to the webserver. It also posts the code, and runs flog over the code. This is useful as you can see how other
(more experienced) people have approached the problem, and see neater ways of performing the same task.

Hopefully you get as much fun out of it as we did!
