I saw in the OpenSCAD documentation where it gets confused if objects touch without overlapping. Seems they recommend subtracting 0.001 from one object's position to create the necessary overlap.

Is it possible to determine where this overlap is needed and create this offset automagically?

Indeed there is this issue with openscad that when faces or vertices touch without overlapping the engine cannot determine whether they are the same object or two separate objects. There is no feature within OpenSCAD to detect this AFAIK along with many other features like determining an object's bounding box etc. The STL file generated can be analysed by external programs but once I figure how to do this, may incorporate it as an extension. Currently you have to do it manually. The "intersection " function may be of help.
