UX problems with some Smartphones resolutions

We have a level builder that supports boards up to 11x11, but some community levels are up to 18x18, and these levels are unplayable on some smartphones.

Either the cells are too small, or they go off-screen when zoomed in, and when the show/hide letter button is used, the letters become unintelligible. The letters "Q" look almost like "O" and the letters "L" look almost like "I"

Yeah I'm allowing people who pay for levels to submit large ones that they've found a way to build. It can be tricky on a small screen yeah.
For letter sizing I think it's a fixed sized and can be made variable in a similar way to how the Queen symbol is. Will have to check.
