I'm sure there's more like this, but these two examples are in wide use in their respective industries. There may be several categories of these kind of references

  1. Dykes or dikes to describe a diagonal or side-cutters. Some brief research seems to say that the term is not intentionally degrading, but may have arisen as a phonetic combining of diagonal and cutters. Is just being easily mistaken for a slur enough to warrant inclusion in self-defined? Regardless, why not just say side cutters or just cutters?
  2. In cooking, the term china cap is often used (specifically) to refer to a conically shaped strainer. Similarly, the French describe the same item as un chinois, the same name used as an adjective in describing a person or thing of Chinese or Taiwanese origin. Predictably, the higher-end kitchens in the U.S. have appropriated the French version. Like English has a strainer, French has une passoire. No need to make a gratuitous and degrading cultural reference.

Generic Categories:

  • A non-essential term easily mistaken for a slur
  • A non-essential term making a degrading reference to some group based on appearance or other factor

I've been reflecting on this more and I think that it makes sense to in the interrim consider these as full terms. Long term, they'll become full terms anyway, so we might as well.

As such, would you be able to pull together a list of any other terms you think of?

I was trying to think of some earlier but did not come up with any others. Let me ruminate on it for a couple days. I feel like they are just out there hiding in plain sight.
