Thermocouples are needed where dissipation or environment prevent the use of NTCs, RTDs, and diodes

  • use the special connectors, which are type-dependent, aim for K-type by default
  • common reference junction "block" closely coupled to ref junction thermistor
  • excellent frontend amplifier (LTC1043+LTC1052? or maybe newer things) with a default gain ~200 (600 K range, 40 µK/LSB)
  • careful design for small temperature gradients across junction/connector/amplifiers with an eye on undesired thermocouple voltages
  • https://www.analog.com/media/en/technical-documentation/application-notes/an28f.pdf etc. and Keithley 2182A for ideas

Maybe just add Maxim integrated AFEs with I2C?

The goal would be to get better than the 16 mK ref junction resultion plus 8 mK TC resolution of that chip. But I agree that this may be marginal.

We already have 2 front-end board options. Maybe we should make them as a separate project...
