Is it intentional that reconcile recurses into objects which are ===?

I was just looking through the implementation of reconcile and something jumped out at me right away. There's a reference identity check to see if two objects aren't === to each other, and if they aren't equal it short-circuits deeper reconciliation and marks that whole subtree as changed. What's surprising is that if the objects are === to one another the reconciler goes ahead with the deeper comparison. Wouldn't it be a given at that point that you won't find any more differences in the === subtrees?

Nope, I'm just bad at reading. The === check is right up there at the very top of applyState.
