DareFightingICE

A fighting game sound design competition for visually impaired

Welcome to fighting game sound design competition for the visually impaired people. This competition is our way of including the mostly ignored group of people when it comes to video game. You are invited to develop and design a sound design for the java base fighting game “FightingICE”, which will help visually impaired people play the game. Hence the name Fighting Blind.

As to why we the FightingICE team at the Intelligent Computer Entertainment Lab (ICE Lab) of Ritsumeikan University are conducting this competition. The reason for that is there is not fighting game which was developed with visually impaired people in mind and there is no sound design competition that does the same. So, our goal is to give some spotlight to a group of people which are overlooked in the gaming community. This competition in many ways is (as of right now) one of its kind. Our hope is that with the help of this competition we can come up with a great sound design that works for fighting games and some of the aspects can also be used in other genres of games.

What To Submit:

You will be provided with a version of FightingICE that already has a sample sound design in it, which is currently in development. You will be allowed to edit a part of source code in the game as well as add your own sounds. Doing this gives you the full ability to design your own sound design. You will submit the sounds, the file/files you are allowed to edit, and a slideshow explaining the changes and the reasoning behind them.

For this competition you will only need to come up with the sound effects for a single character(Zen).

Rules:

- The sounds you submit must be copyright free. - Intelligent Computer Entertainment Lab (ICE Lab) of Ritsumeikan University will have the right over the sounds you submit. - One team can only submit one sound design. - If you add any new sound which is not in the sample sound design. You are asked to give a reason for the addition.

Sample Sound Design:

Details about the sample sound design will be released soon.

Evaluation:

Evaluation of your sound designs will be done as following:
Normal people (people with vision) will test your sound design while wearing a blind fold. The total number of people testing you sound design is not static, but rest assure it will not be a very small number, like 3,4 etc. The blind folded people will play against a weak AI, the reason for the AI being weak is that these people are not visually impaired and are not used to playing a game blind folded. Each person will play against the AI 3 times for a sound design and the score will be calculated by how many people were able to defeat the AI and how much health they have left. If they were not able to defeat the AI, the remaining health of the AI will be counted. A more detailed and concrete description of the evaluation process and the calculation of the score will be available soon.
