ETags not set on edge API responses

I have a simple API route:

// app/api/hello/route.ts

export const runtime = 'edge';

export async function GET(req: NextRequest) {
  return NextRespojnse.json({ hello: 'world' })
}

I would expect that response to include an ETag, but it does not.

Things I've checked:

• I have enabled generateEtags.
• I have a middleware, but it's not running on this route
